Description

Catalogue identity

The set of fields that must agree between container, certificate and register: CAS registry number 544-31-0, molecular formula C18H37NO2, molar mass 299.5 g/mol. A container whose label does not reproduce all three is not accepted onto the shelf.

Chemical class

N-(2-hydroxyethyl)hexadecanamide, an amide formed between palmitic acid and ethanolamine. The class decides cabinet neighbours: away from strong oxidisers, concentrated acids and bases.

Physical form

Crystalline solid, offered here at declared purity of at least 99 percent and in a net quantity of 1000 mg. The form governs the weighing vessel and the anti-static precautions used at the balance.

Primary packaging

The sealed aluminium string pouch in which the material was delivered. It is the moisture and light barrier, and it is never used as the outer layer of a shipment.

Secondary packaging

The rigid carton, cushioning and any desiccant added by the store. It carries the mechanical load in transport and the label that a courier is allowed to read.

Batch number

The manufacturer identifier that ties the container to one analytical certificate. It is never replaced by an internal code; an internal code may only be added alongside it.

Certificate of analysis

The document stating measured values for the specific lot delivered. Filed against the register line, not inside the pouch, so that it survives the container.

Stock card

The running record for one batch: receipt, each withdrawal with the mass taken, the balance after each movement, and the entry that closes the batch.

Quarantine position

A marked location, physically separated from released stock, holding containers with a broken seal, a damaged label, an unclear storage history or an expired retest date.

First expired, first out

The issue rule: the container with the earliest retest date leaves the shelf first, regardless of which one is nearest to hand.

Retest date

The date declared by the manufacturer after which the batch requires fresh analytical confirmation before further issue. Passing it moves the container to quarantine, not to disposal.

Cold chain

An unbroken temperature-controlled route from supplier to shelf, applied only when the label demands it. Improvised chilling is an uncontrolled change, not a precaution.

Two habits keep those definitions honest. The pouch returns to its position the moment a portion has been weighed out, because most storage damage happens to containers left on a bench. An opened pouch is brought to room temperature before the next opening, so that atmospheric water does not condense on cold crystalline material.

Outbound movement reuses the same vocabulary: papers naming the compound, CAS number, quantity and batch travel outside the sealed pouch, regulatory status at the destination is confirmed before dispatch, and a parcel lost in transit is closed on the stock card in writing.
